Alberta led Canada in 2025 with over 53,000 housing starts, a 14% increase from the previous year, accounting for more than a quarter of national starts. Efforts to reduce red tape and update building codes helped lower rents, with Edmonton's average rent about $400 below the national average. Over 44,000 rental units were added in four years. The government plans $9 billion for 25,000 affordable units by 2031. 2026 is expected to see moderated growth due to external factors.
